Thomas Rhett has been writing and recording songs about his love affair with wife Lauren for several years now, so you’d expect his new hit, “Marry Me,” to follow in that romantic vein. The video seems to continue that theme, with the couple in the clip coming close to taking their high school friendship to the next level.

Unlike Thomas, however, the guy in the video passes up the chance to give the girl that kiss, and she goes on to fall in love and get engaged to someone else. You can just feel the heartbreak as the guy drowns his sorrows in whiskey at a diner where they used to hang out. He tried to go to the wedding, but seeing her actually say “I do” to another man is just to much for him.

Thomas admits this could have been his story with Lauren if he hadn’t had the courage to admit his true feelings.

“If I had never told Lauren how I felt about her, I probably would have been at her wedding watching her marry someone else,” he says. “So, I really wanted to capture that feeling of heartbreak in this video – and this really hits me in the gut.”

In the end, it looks like true love might find a way to conquer all. Be sure and watch the clip all the way through for a twist we really didn’t see coming.

“Marry Me” is the latest single from Thomas’s third album, “Life Changes,” which is one of the top-selling country projects of 2017. This year also saw Thomas and Lauren welcome their adopted daughter, Willa, just before the arrival of their second baby, Ada. Needless to say, this Christmas will be a very special one for this family. Thomas is excited to recapture some of that holiday spirit looking at things through his daughters’ eyes.

As they get older, he expects them to be on the lookout for Santa, too.

Thomas says, “Growing up, waiting for Christmas felt like you were sitting there waiting for six years. And now that we have kids, I do think that that … little anxious feeling of ‘God, it’s gonna take me forever to fall asleep tonight’ is gonna be back because we know that that’s what Willa and Ada are thinking about. So, it’ll be fun.”

Of note, Thomas’s incredible 2017 ended up with him being voted by you, our Rare Country readers, as the Story of the Year at this year’s Rare Country Awards. All year long, we’ve kept you updated with every development as Thomas and Lauren expanded their family with the arrival of their two daughters and celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary. We look forward to continuing to tell that story along with them in the new year.
