Sugarland is back from their extended hiatus with a brand-new song designed to announce their return to the country music scene as a duo. It’s titled “Still the Same,” and there’s no denying this pair still has the spark that led them to multi-platinum success.
Jennifer Nettles sounds powerful as ever singing the lyrics about picking up a love right where you left off. Kristian Bush backs her up on the chorus, and his songwriting and production skills are evident on the slow-burning track. It’s the perfect next step for a duo that’s been sorely missed since they embarked on pursing solo projects about five years ago.
Before the hiatus began, Sugarland racked up multiple hits including their 2004 debut single, “Baby Girl,” which is still a crowd favorite. They followed it up with the CMA and ACM Song of the Year winner, “Stay.” That song also won the duo two Grammy Awards, including Best Country Song for Jennifer, who wrote it.
Their 2008 album, “Love on the Inside,” produced three of their five No. 1 hits, including “All I Want to Do” and “Already Gone.”
The ambitious project, “The Incredible Machine,” followed in 2010.
From that point, Jennifer went on to release two solo studio albums as well as a Christmas project. She also showed off her acting chops, appearing in a lead role in the musical “Chicago” on Broadway and starring in a pair of TV movies based on Dolly Parton’s classic song, “Coat of Many Colors.”
Kristian spent his time away from Sugarland establishing himself as a solo act in his own right. His 2015 studio album, “Southern Gravity,” produced a top 20 country hit, “Trailer Hitch.” He also wrote or produced music for other acts, including Lauren Alaina, Lindsay Ell and Canaan Smith.
Though that time apart was fruitful, there is nothing like seeing Jennifer and Kristian perform together. They electrified the crowd at their new record labels’ CMA Awards after-party with a few of their biggest hits, including “Baby Girl.” They announced their reunion while presenting the Duo of the Year trophy on the CMA Awards broadcast.
We’ll get to see Sugarland back in action on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” on ABC Dec. 31. They’ve also confirmed performances for the C2C: Country 2 Country Music Festival in Europe this coming spring. We’ve got our fingers crossed they’ll be adding shows in the U.S. very soon.
