Country singer-songwriter Cam just released the video for her brand-new single, “Diane,” and it’s a real doozy.

In the song, Cam sings from the perspective of a woman who unknowingly entered into a relationship with a married man. Once she finds out he’s married to a woman named Diane, Cam’s character calls her up to apologize and encourage Diane to stand up for herself in the situation.

The video raises the stakes even higher as we find out that Diane already has a daughter with this guy and they’ve got another baby on the way. What’s even more terrible is that the guy tries to charm Cam’s character in the bar by drawing a cute bunny on a bar napkin. He also colors cute little bunnies with his daughter.

How creepy is that?

In the end, Diane apparently leaves the guy after a tearful meeting with Cam’s character, in which Cam hands the bar napkin with the bunny on it to Diane as proof of the affair.

Cam says of the “Diane” song and video, “”It’s the apology so many spouses deserve, but never get. The other woman is coming forward to break the news to the wife about an affair, respecting her enough to have that hard conversation once she realized he was married.”

During a Feb. 6 industry showcase at Country Radio Seminar in Nashville, Cam performed the song at the CMA Theater and told the audience, “It’s like that really old school country where you’re dancing [to it] and then you realize, ‘Whoa, that’s some dark s**t.’ And I love that!”

In an interview with “People,” Cam reveals just how far she went to get this emotional video just right. Her preparation included  a few acting lessons so she could really get into character.

Cam says, “Acting is basically like therapy: realizing how you feel in certain situations and what are the thoughts behind the different scenes. When I’m acting, what is it that anger feels like and what do you feel when you feel angry? And can I feel my throat starting to get tight, and can I feel my fist clench? And you recreate that feeling for yourself. You’re not saying, ‘I’m angry right now.’ You really feel angry.”

The scene in the video where Cam’s character meets Diane in the park was actually the first time the country singer met the actress playing the song’s title role.

Cam says of that tense scene, “She’s walking up to me for the first time, with tears streaming out of her eyes, and she’s coming at me, and she goes — and you can’t hear the dialogue, but what she’s saying to me is, ‘Did you know he was married?’ At one point she goes, ‘Did he tell you he loved you?’ The whole thing was so intense.”

“Diane” is a powerful video from Cam, who has given us a string of cinematic clips in the past few years. Just check out her videos for “Mayday” and her signature hit, “Burning House.”

“Diane” is the lead single from Cam’s upcoming studio album, due out later this year.
