We’ve seen a lot of country stars speaking about Tom Petty on their socials since his unfortunate passing on Oct. 2. And we’ve even seen a few tributes to the rocker. But this cover from Miley Cyrus and dad Billy Ray Cyrus shows the real gap that Petty bridged between country and rock ’n’ roll.
The father and daughter appeared together on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” Oct. 5, and Miley was the picture of a country star … yes, a country star … in a soft, lacy dress reminiscent of what her godmother, Dolly Parton, might have worn as a young star, with her hair in soft curls. Billy Ray was perched on a stool nearby strumming out the chords of the Petty favorite “Wildflowers,” and adding his harmony vocals to the chorus.
According to “E! News,” prior to the performance, Miley told Howard Stern, “The reason why I chose this song is because it’s hopeful … rather than mourning.”
We could all use a little hope this week, right?
“Wildflowers” is from Tom’s 1994 album of the same name. Never officially released as a single, it has long been a favorite among country stars for its well-crafted lyric and obviously groovy acoustic arrangement.
Sadly, we lost Tom too soon. He passed away at the young age of 66 after suffering a cardiac arrest.
His incredible legacy of music assures that he lives on.
