Keith Urban welcomed his new tour mate, Kelsea Ballerini, onstage Wednesday night, Jan. 17, during his pop-up show at Nashville’s Exit/In. They’ll hit the road together on the “Graffiti U” tour in June. Get the dates here.
Judging from the song they chose to sing together, we should all expect the unexpected from this upcoming trek.
Keith explained the song choice saying, “So, I said we should figure out a song to do. We’re obviously going to do something on the tour, but spontaneously, I said to Kelsea, we should do something completely different. I’m a big fan of this song, which just came out recently. It’s by another artist. I said to Kelsea, ‘We should try this song. What the heck. It’s a great song. We’ll give it a shot.’”
The two of them then launched into a cover of pop star Camila Cabello’s steamy pop hit “Never Be the Same.
Keith and Kelsea got a thumbs up on their duet from Camila herself. She saw the video and tweeted, “OH MY GOD!!!! @KeithUrban AND @KelseaBallerini THIS. IS. MAGICAL.”
This club appearance marked Kelsea’s first time in front of an audience since she tied the knot with her Australian hubby, Morgan Evans. He was in the crowd for the performance, and Keith brought him up onstage to congratulate the two of them on their marriage.
Keith said to Kelsea, “You’ve got your hubby with you! It’s nice! It’s sweet!”
Getting to go on the road with Keith Urban is a really big deal for Kelsea. She had started writing songs as a young teenager, but didn’t know what she wanted to do with them until she heard Keith’s hit, “Stupid Boy.” That song inspired her to set her sights on becoming a country star, and she soon started going to as many Keith Urban shows as she could.
She just shared this picture of herself at age 14 on the front row at a Keith show.
Kelsea’s caption says, “I wish I could go back and tell my 14-year-old self that 10 years later I would spend my summer touring with the person [whose] songs led me to Nashville. Y’ALL. see you on the @keithurban tour!!! #graffitiu.”
The “Graffiti U” tour kicks off June 15 in St. Louis. Keith also announced his new album, “Graffiti U,” will be out very soon, and a new song from that project, “Parallel Line,” will be out on Friday.
“Graffiti U” will also feature Keith’s powerful hit, “Female.” Here he is performing it during his New Year’s Eve show in Nashville backed up by the Fisk Jubilee Singers.
