Temperatures across much of the country are at or below freezing lately, so we’re glad to have found this red-hot new country talent to really warm things up for us.
Caitlyn Smith made her late-night TV debut Jan. 16 on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” and she certainly made the most of her performance slot. Delivering her fiery song, “Contact High,” Caitlyn commanded the stage like a pro. She looked stunning in the process all decked out in a sparkly black jumpsuit. From the beginning, you can tell Caitlyn is a born entertainer.
Don’t stop watching this performance until she’s done, though.
It’s at the end when she hits the ground wailing about her man giving a contact high that Caitlyn really blows the roof off “The Tonight Show” studio. The studio audience broke out into applause mid-song, which is pretty incredible considering Caitlyn had never appeared on a major TV show before.
The viewers at home were eating it up, too, and they let Caitlyn know just how much they were digging her performance via Twitter.
Twitter user @charspage says, “What a voice! Beautiful.” New fan @racpa_atkins was stunned at how Caitlyn held nothing back in her commanding performance saying, “OMG Janis Joplin is rolling. This girl has IT!!!!!!”
The YouTube comments were just as glowing, with Jacob Kolody raving, “Very rare to get this kind of energy in a late night performance. You can tell she loves what she does.”
Fan @brielleann was rocking “Contact High” earlier this month as soon as it hit the digital outlets. She even called the song a “fire bomb,” and we’ve got to agree with her on that one. Caitlyn is definitely turning some heads with this bold sound.
Caitlyn called it correctly about all the buzz currently surrounding her career with this tweet on Jan. 1. She said, “You guys, 2018 is gonna rule.”
Though she’s a new face to fans, Caitlyn has been writing and songs and trying to make it in Nashville for several years now. She’s had success as a songwriter with Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers recording a song she co-wrote, “You Can’t Make Old Friends.” She’s also had cuts by Rascal Flatts, Garth Brooks, and Lady Antebellum as well as Meghan Trainor and John Legend.
Getting to this point of releasing her debut album and appearing on “The Tonight Show” came after years of hearing a lot people tell her no, though. She wrote about that experience in another song on “Starfire” titled “This Town Is Killing Me.”
Caitlyn says of trying to make it in Music City, ”It can be a such a hard, heartbreak town. As much as you want to write those songs you know would pay the bills, if you did it every day, the artist part in you would die. There is this balance of loving this town because you get to create, but also it is just so brutal.”
A big ray of light arrived in the middle of making “Starfire,” though. Caitlyn gave birth to her son, Tom, in 2016 while making the project.
She says, “”It added a beautiful layer of excitement. Not only was I making a record, but I’m making a life. This little boy has been along for the ride.”
Caitlyn will deliver her debut album, “Starfire,” on Jan. 19.
