Dixie Chicks’ Natalie Maines sings of love lost in intimate new performance Instagram/@1nataliemaines

When the Dixie Chicks were cranking out their country hits in the late ’90s and early ’00s, they always had an ear for songs written by singer/songwriters outside the country format. Often, they’d take those songs and put their Dixie Chicks stamp on it. You can hear it in their No. 1 country single, “Landslide,” a cover of the classic Fleetwood Mac track.

That instinct still lives on with Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines. As she begins to redefine her life in the wake of her split from longtime husband Adrian Pasdar, Natalie has begun posting a few well-chosen cover songs on her Instagram account.

Here we’re featuring her take on indie rock darling Beth Ditto’s song, “Lover.” As she sings about a romantic partner “playing dirty with me,” Natalie sings directly into the camera with all that conviction and fire that made those Dixie Chicks songs unforgettable.

Her fans are eating these covers up. The comments range from, “So happy you are making these covers, it’s very beautiful, love you queen,” to “Thank you for all the inspiration you’ve given me throughout the years.”

Natalie also turned in a cover of Lana Del Rey’s dangerously flirty song  “Off to the Races.”

It’s interesting to see Natalie try on these different songs. Love her or hate her, having Natalie around makes things infinitely more interesting.

Keep ’em coming, Natalie!
