A teenage country singer slays a country classic on “The Voice” YouTube/The Voice

Blake Shelton had only one open spot on his team going into the final night of the blind auditions on season 14 of “The Voice,” and he filled it with 17-year-old California-born singer Dallas Caroline.

The country coach swooped Dallas up on March 13 after she sang “Always On My Mind” – a much recorded song popularized by Elvis Presley in 1972, and by Willie Nelson’s Grammy-winning version a decade later. Dallas dedicated the performance to her hometown community of Santa Rosa, an area that has been devastated by recent wildfires and mudslides.

For her audition, Dallas paired a fashionable white romper with cowgirl boots, and wore her hair down in curls. Her high soprano vocals and gorgeous long notes made coaches Kelly Clarkson and Adam Levine turn around pretty quickly. Even though Blake was last to hit his red button, he made sure to point out just how much he wanted Dallas on his team.

“When I see somebody young like you performing, ‘Always On My Mind,’ I mean, that’s one of the most sacred country songs of all time, and I can go, ‘Wow, there’s our next LeAnn Rimes. There’s our next Tanya Tucker. There’s our next hero in country music.’ That’s why I want to be your coach on the show. Let’s do this Dallas!” he said enthusiastically.

“This is a nerve-wracking situation. I’ve been you. I will say that you have a beautiful quality that is missing in country music,” Kelly added, before comparing herself to rival Blake. “I’ve been to his shows, I’ve sang with him onstage. I’ve seen all of the girls be like, ‘Oh my god, Blake.’ But I love country music too.”

Adam also made his case in hopes of getting Dallas on his team. He said, “I believe that you were nervous because you were literally shaking in your boots, but the core of who you are as a singer is there. When I see cowboy boots I usually run for the hills, but I don’t care. I’m going to fight for you, Dallas, because you’re awesome and you should be on my team, because it would be different.”

As for coach Alicia Keys, she told Dallas that she would have turned around for the singer, too, but her team was already full. As previously noted, Dallas went with Team Blake. Watch her performance of “Always On My Mind” in the video below, and let us know what you think!
