A contemporary country star took on a Hank Jr. classic in a honky-tonk Twitter/@DariusRucker

A lot of great country stars got their start performing occasionally or regularly at one of the honky-tonks in downtown Nashville. Terri Clark, Craig Campbell, Jon Pardi, Thompson Square, heck, Tyler Farr was even a bouncer before he hit the stage at one of the historic district’s many clubs. But Darius Rucker wasn’t part of that scene before he hit the big time in the country world.

So, he’s making up for it … with a little help from some friends.

Darius will soon release a new album and, to promote it, he is launching the episodic video series “For the First Time.” The first installment hit social media on September 12 and in it, Darius did something for the first time. He took Tennessee Titans players Ben Jones and Ryan Succop to Legends Corner in downtown Nashville and hijacked the stage from the house band, the Kinsey Rose Band.

Before he took the stage, Darius admitted, “I don’t think I’ve ever sung down on the corner before,” but Ryan one-upped him saying, “I don’t think I’ve ever sung, period.”

Maybe not, but the boys definitely got the crowd singing and dancing along when they tore through Hank Williams Jr.’s “Family Tradition.” But they also gave a nod to Darius’ success with the fan favorite “Wagon Wheel.”

The South Carolina-based country star then explained and issued a challenge, “I really want people to realize that what I’m saying with this record is live your life. Just take a second and go do something you’ve never done before,” he said.

“For the First Time” is set for an October 20 release. The debut single from the project, “If I Told You,” has already hit the No. 1 spot on the country radio chart, and the title track follows that up at radio.
