By now, the tree is probably up, at least most of the gifts are purchased, and the stockings are hung by the chimney with care. Whew! Isn’t it about time to settle down in front of the fireplace for a cup of nog while your favorite Christmas songs play in the background?
If you’re fumbling for favorites, Erin Holt has a special edition of Rare Country’s 5 where she counts down some favorite holiday hits that are staples for your Christmas playlist.
Starting at No. 5, this song is a tearjerker anyway, but add in Rascal Flatts’ ethereal blend of harmonies and pass us a tissue… quick. The song was originally performed by Bing Crosby and was from the perspective of a soldier unable to be home for the holidays. Bing even sang it in the classic holiday film, “White Christmas,” but as touring musicians, the Flatts boys know a thing or two about not being home, too. Erin reveals that tune in this edition of Rare Country’s 5.
It isn’t really a Christmas song and it isn’t really from a Christmas movie, but the title alone has made this Dolly Parton tune a holiday favorite and our No. 4 track. It’s more about a figure of speech that reminds us that no matter how bad things look, keep your chin up. Attitude is half the battle, and Santa is watching. And you can see which song it is by watching Rare Country’s 5.
It’s a classic. It’s a really, really big classic deserving of a really, really big voice and Martina McBride has, arguably, the biggest voice in country music. Many country stars have lent their own unique vocal stylings to this traditional favorite, but there’s something so chilling when Martina sings it that it stops you in your tracks and earns her the No. 3 spot on Rare Country’s 5 countdown
You just can’t have a list of great Christmas songs without including this magical Carrie Underwood cover that is solid at No. 2. It takes a range as vast as Carrie’s to tackle this traditional tune with its many key changes and soaring choruses, but she’s the girl for the job. Of course, many would argue that she could sing anything and we wouldn’t dispute that, but this one is just extra special. Check it out!
He may have been a movie star cowboy, but we’ll be danged if he couldn’t sing his spurs off, too. Gene Autry is a favorite among children and adults alike for multiple holiday classics that we all now know like the back of our hands, but one rises to the top of our Rare Country’s 5 as an eternal favorite. And although many, many stars have covered this sweet song, it’s Gene’s that make us feel all warm and toasty.
That’s it for another special edition of Rare Country’s 5. Check back in for more fun installments and, as always, our regular news-filled Rare Country’s 5 with Erin Holt.
