It happened the first time she sang “Independence Day” back in 1993. It happened again when she performed “Broken Wing” in 1997. And in January of 2016, it happened yet again.
And this time, it was magical.
“They were applauding during the first chorus, and there was a standing ovation at the end,” Martina McBride told Rare Country on Feb. 23 about her first live performance of her brand-new single “Reckless.” “In my history, those are two very good signs.”
The song is already getting much love after its Feb. 26 release, and it touches on a feeling that Martina has never forgotten.
“I was 20 years old and singing in a club five nights a week till 3 in the morning, and you just don’t run into the best of characters in that situation,” recalls Martina during the Rare Country interview. “I didn’t do anything that would land me in jail (laughs) but I was partying a bit too much and I met [my husband] John [McBride] around that time, and he just loved me unconditionally right from the beginning.”
Of course, as with any song, people are attaching their personal stories to this one. “I heard from a fan that the song completely reminded her of her relationship with her mom,” Martina says. “I was like, ‘Wow, I never thought of that.’ Because I was so attached to it and my own story.”
Indeed, powerful songs bring with them powerful stories.
And yes, it’s happened again.
