Could Kelsea Ballerini’s life be any sweeter these days? She certainly doesn’t think so.
As she gears up to perform her No. 1 hit “Peter Pan” on The 50th Annual CMA Awards Nov. 2, Kelsea just freaked out to learn she is sitting right in front of one of her idols, Olivia Newton-John, during the big show.
In this clip, you can see Kelsea sharing the big news with her fans before breaking into a little bit of Olivia’s “Hopelessly Devoted to You.” Olivia actually won CMA female vocalist of the year in 1974, and Kelsea is nominated in that category this year on the strength of her three consecutive No. 1 hits.
Though she’s got a good chance of taking that trophy home, Kelsea has nothing but high praise for her fellow female vocalist nominees.
She says, “I would not even know what it looks like to be a female in country music if I didn’t have Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood to look up to. I think Kacey Musgraves is the most brilliant songwriter I’ve ever heard and I think Maren Morris is takin’ us all to church. I am stoked to be in that category.”
Kelsea is also up for new artist of the year, and she still can’t believe she’s made the leap from country fan to country star.
“The last two years have just been full of full-circle moments where I waited in line to meet someone and now, we’re friends,” Kelsea explains. “Or I saved up to go see Rascal Flatts in concert when they were in Knoxville, and then I just was on tour with them all summer. Those kind of moments that I did on the other side, I was a fan, you know. I saved up to get the seat, or I waited in line to meet the person. Now, I’m on this side of it, and it just makes me appreciate it more.”
Those “pinch me” moments just keep happening for Kelsea.
Look for Kelsea on The 50th Annual CMA Awards airing live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday, Nov. 2 on ABC.
