The death of Merle Haggard on April 6 turned Vince Gill’s world upside down. As a lifelong musician, Vince looked up to Merle as his favorite singer/songwriter of all time. As a fellow member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Vince also got the chance to be around Merle on several occasions.

At the Country Music Hall of Fame benefit concert April 12 in Nashville, Vince called Merle his “greatest hero.” He also noted that April 12 was his 49th birthday, so Vince took the opportunity to perform Merle’s “The Bottle Let Me Down” as a tribute.

That’s Keith Urban playing guitar and singing with Vince on this cover. The two of them co-hosted their sixth All for the Hall concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena with special guests Luke Bryan, Florida Georgia Line, Emmylou Harris, Maddie & Tae, Maren Morris and many more.
