Nationally syndicated country radio personality Bobby Bones had some personal news to share with his listeners this week.

“I guess I’ll just go ahead and say it: Lindsay and I broke up. It sucks,” he told them, referencing his girlfriend of more than a year, country artist Lindsay Ell.

This is not the news we wanted for the pair. Although they were happy together and seemed every bit the perfect couple, the relationship was apparently troubled from the beginning due to their respective careers. Bobby is a radio mogul, comedian and musician, and Lindsay is a recording artist and rising star in her own right. According to Bobby, that made for an unfortunate concern from the beginning.

“I’ve been dating Lindsay for over a year,” he explained on the air. “We’ve known each other for a few years. We started dating and I was like, ‘We probably should think about this before we date, because it could probably hurt your career. Because other radio stations, Spotify, they’re gonna hold it against you because you’re dating me. I don’t even know these people, but they’re gonna hold it against you,’ and they did.”

Remember the kerfuffle in June with the Sacramento, California, radio station that refused to let Lindsay in the building for a scheduled performance because of her relationship with Bobby? Bones claimed to his  his listeners that stuff like that happened to her often.

“It started to put a stress on our relationship, to me, where I felt like it was my fault that she wasn’t able to get anything going,” he said.

And then he stood up to the alleged haters with this bold statement. “First of all, this wouldn’t happen if she weren’t a female artist,” Bobby said. “This wouldn’t happen to a dude. And secondly I don’t have anything to do with what she does as an artist.”

Bobby says that four months or so ago the two stopped posting about each other on social media due to some backlash.

“It wasn’t fair to her. It wasn’t fair that people put her in this spot. And it became a humungous stress on our relationship,” he said.

But there’s no animosity whatsoever. The two are still friends and care about each other, he added.

“It just wouldn’t have happened if this were a dude. Women already have it so tough in this industry. And then again because she chose to date me … [she] is being penalized to this day,” Bobby said.

Kudos to Bobby for stepping up and calling out the haters, but we’re still sad the two aren’t together anymore.
