It would be awesome if none of us ever had to know the pain of losing someone we love, wouldn’t it? Sadly, life doesn’t work that way, so the best we can do is try to keep those sweet memories alive. Scotty McCreery is keeping some of his favorite memories alive, and helping fans do the same, with his hit song “Five More Minutes.”
Scotty has very openly told the story of how the song was written after his beloved grandfather Bill passed away in 2015. The last verse of the song is so inspired and beautifully written that he virtually takes you in the room with his family as the heartbreaking event transpired. Scotty admits that the song is the most personal thing he has ever written, and he’s even become emotional while performing the tune in his shows. It’s understandable. He and his grandfather were very close, and in a new photo that the country star shares on his social media, we can see one of the bonds they shared.
On his Instagram page, Scotty posted a “Throwback Thursday” picture of his granddaddy, who appears to be stringing up a rod and reel at the beach. Next to him is a very young and extremely excited Scotty, obviously delighted at the prospect of what was to happen once his granddaddy got a hook on that line.
He captions the photo simply, “What I’d give for #fivemoreminutes of fishing with granddaddy. #tbt.”
As heartbreaking as “Five More Minutes” is, it has also given listeners a source of healing from their own losses. Almost as soon as fans heard the song the first time, they began clamoring for it to be included on his next album. They won’t have to wait very much longer for that. Scotty’s fourth studio album, “Seasons Change,” is set to release on March 16, and every track on the collection features Scotty as a co-writer, a first for the singer.
Another first for Scotty is the huge success of “Five More Minutes” as a single. Thanks to his loyal fans, lovingly known as the McCreerians, the song began its ascent up the country singles chart without the traditional help of a record label’s radio promotion team. But now, the North Carolina native has a new label and “Five More Minutes” it is poised to become his highest-charting single to date. Currently sitting at No. 10 on the charts, it could soon surpass his most successful single, “See You Tonight,” which reached No. 8.
Whew! It’s going to be a busy year for the 24-year-old entertainer. In addition to all of the radio and media appearances he’ll do to promote his new album and a likely second single from the project, Scotty has a full tour schedule that currently runs from Jan. 26 into the summer. And let’s not forget that very important wedding that he is planning with his super sweet fiancée, Gabi Dugal.
Congrats on a heckuva ride, Scotty.
