It’s been a long time coming. About two years, actually. So a celebration was definitely in order.

Congratulations go out to Scotty McCreery, who landed his first No. 1 single, “Five More Minutes,” last week.

Scotty started performing the then unreleased song in early 2016, and fan response was instantaneous. The song wasn’t on an album and hadn’t even been issued as a single at that point. In fact, at the time, Scotty was between record deals, so even if he had released it, there was no label team to help it climb the charts. Not that it would have mattered to his fans or to most country music fans. It was a hit.

When he performed the tune, Scotty claimed it was his favorite song that he had ever written, probably because of the personal nature of the lyrics. Co-written by Scotty after his grandfather passed away in 2015, the last verse speaks directly to that intensely private moment.

At the increasingly urgent request of fans, Scotty finally did release “Five More Minutes” in May 2017. After it began to find success organically, he then signed his new recording contract in August. And then, on Feb. 19, nine months after its release, the industry’s Mediabase chart reflected Scotty’s first No. 1.

If ever there was an occasion to pop a bottle of bubbly, this was it.

Of course, there will be many opportunities for Scotty and his beautiful fiancée, Gabi Dugal, to uncork a bottle of Veuve Clicquot in the months ahead with their nuptials taking place later in the year, but the couple couldn’t wait until a formal industry No. 1 party to get the corkscrew out. Gabi posted a photo of herself with her man having a casual, but equally important celebration in the kitchen.

Gabi bragged on her fella a little bit and wrote, “Cheers to hard work, perseverance, and a whole lot of faith and trust in God’s good plans! Proud of this man I get to call mine 😍 and the awesome #1  song he’s written!! A sweet, sweet blessing 💗 Keep on killin the game Scoot! Love you 😘 #fivemoreminutes”

Of course, it wasn’t just Scotty and Gabi who were celebrating! Scotty’s proud pops, Mike, also posted a champagne-themed meme on his Instagram, and it sounds like the whole family was there to help celebrate the musical milestone. Mike wrote, “Well it is now official. ‘Five More Minutes’ is THE #1 country song in America! Very proud of you @scottymccreery – Pops”

Scotty released his first single, “I Love You This Big,” in May 2011, about six years before “Five More Minutes.” His most successful single before “Five More Minutes” was 2013’s “See You Tonight,” which peaked at No. 8.

There’s one celebration down and at least three more to go. One will take place when Scotty’s record label, publishers, and the industry gather to toast his first No. 1 single. Another will take place, of course, when Scotty and Gabi tie the knot. But the third could happen if the young singer-songwriter and his family win “Family Feud.” That’s right, Scotty, Gabi and family members recently taped an episode of “Celebrity Family Feud,” which will air soon.
