Sam Hunt went and did something a country artist hasn’t done in more than six years youtube

He was the lone country wolf in a category of some of music’s brightest rising stars.

Nominated for “New Artist of the Year” at the American Music Awards on Nov. 22 against artists such as Fetty Wap, Tove Lo, Walk the Moon and Weeknd, Sam Hunt was announced as the winner by host Jennifer Lopez, much to the delight of country music fans everywhere. It was the first time a country music artist has won the category since 2009 when vocal group Gloriana took home the honor.

“First off, thank you to all the people who voted me up here tonight,” Hunt told the crowd. “I really appreciate it. It means a lot to me. I’m proud to represent country music tonight. To all my people back in Nashville that have been with me since the start – you put your faith in me and you were down with me for the long haul. We’ll see you guys back in Nashville.”
