There are days that we all dread.

And on March 8, Rory Feek had one of those days.

Because on that particular afternoon, Rory and dear daughter Indiana, along with family and close friends, watched as Joey Feek was laid to rest during a private funeral at the country duo’s farm in Pottsville, Tenn.

Joey passed away from her battle with cancer on March 4.

“It was tearful, but it was optimistic, especially being on the dirt,” the couple’s close friend Bill Gaither told People Magazine. “She was part of the earth. We all felt as though we were close to her.”

The scene was said to be somber, as Joey’s casket was placed on a horse drawn carriage and brought to her final resting place. Singers were also on hand singing the song “Let’s Go Down to the River and Pray.” But through it all, Rory stayed strong, according to his friend Bill.

“I talked to him last night about the service, and I said, ‘First, Rory – how are you doing?’ and he said, ‘Well, I took Indiana to the school this morning to enroll her. He said, ‘This is the first day of the rest of my life. I have responsibilities.’ I think that’s pretty special. [He’s thinking], ‘What is the next step?'”
