What did you dream of being when you grew up? Was it a teacher? A doctor? A firefighter? A veterinarian? Maybe even a cowboy or cowgirl? What about a spy? What about a cowgirl spy?
Sure, it seems like an odd combination, and that may not be exactly what little red-headed curly top Marlee McDonald has in mind, but the mutton busting champ has some goals that are making us feel pretty good about the future.
Marlee took part in the mutton busting event during the opening night of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. If you aren’t familiar with the event, junior rodeo competitors (5- and 6-year-olds), are put on the backs of sheep, or mutton, with the goal of staying on as long as possible as the sheep runs across a contained area in the rodeo arena. Marlee did it, scoring a 90 and winning the buckle on the first night of competition.
But, as all superstar buckle winners must do, Marlee spoke to the media following her event. And it was then that we learned of the ginger’s greater goals. When asked what she wanted to be when she grows up, she quickly replied, “A spy.”
Marlee then went on to say, “Like, where you get to fight for the world, like, the bad guys, where you get to fight them.”
Mutton buster by day, crime fighter by night. Super Marlee!
It will probably be a few years before we find out if this little bit of goodness, heart and sass realizes that big dream, and she may change her mind a few times between now and then, but she has all the makings of being a hero in whatever field she pursues. She has already proven that when she wants something, she holds on tight.
She also revealed that at her young age, she’s listening to her parents. During her interview, she said that when it came to her rodeo event, “I did what my parents told me. I just hold on really tight until I can’t get a grip.”
Wise words, Marlee!
Can we suggest, though, that if a career as a cowgirl, superhero or spy doesn’t pan out, she has a very promising career as an announcer? This little girl’s voice is bigger than she is!
