Whenever we hear news of a favorite artist who is injured, ill or suffering, whether they’re a chart-topping country star or a banging it out in clubs, it stops us in our tracks. This most recent news took our breath away.
You may not be familiar with Brandon Jenkins or his music, but if you are into great, gritty grooves, meaningful or clever lyrics and downright country arrangements, you may want to check him out. Brandon has built his fame and a loyal fan base in the insanely popular Red Dirt music scene that also embraces artists like Wade Bowen, Sunny Sweeney, Willie Nelson, Stoney LaRue, Cody Canada, Ward Davis, Cody Jinks and Whitey Morgan. Some call the format outlaw country, others call it honky-tonk, most just call it damn good.
Earlier in February, Brandon shared the news on his Instagram page that he would require major heart surgery to replace a valve.
As he awaited surgery, Brandon retained his typically upbeat attitude, even standing up from his hospital bed when the national anthem was played at the Olympics.
Even on Feb. 21, as doctors prepared for the operation, Brandon’s personality was cheerful and optimistic.
However, surgery wasn’t as picture perfect as family, friends and fans were praying it would be. After he went into surgery, an update was posted on his Facebook page saying that there were complications.
Update from the OR: Brandon is still in surgery, he had some issues come up that they are dealng with. We are staying…
Texas and Red Dirt music executive Dillon Steen shared a post from Brandon’s mother, and also asked, “Out of respect for the family and all they are dealing with right now, I ask that you just watch Brandon’s page as they will post updates as they can and as time allows. I can tell you that the next 48 hours are critical, and as serious as this was starting out … it is even more serious now.”

Later, Dillon shared another post from Brandon’s mother, Wilma, further explaining Brandon’s perilous condition and thanking everyone for their prayers.
“He went back to surgery this morning and they were able to stop the blood loss,” Wilma wrote. “His chest is still open and he is sedated. They remind us that he is extremely critical and hoping for some kind of stabilization.”
The latest update on Brandon Jenkins folks….this is where we stand as of now….please keep the prayers continuing.
In his most recent post, on Feb. 23, Dillon revealed that Brandon’s condition was still extremely critical, but that the music community was coming together to help defray the cost of the mounting bills incurred from this complication.
Good morning everyone….quick update and info….status of Brandon Jenkins remains extremely critical….the family…
We echo the messages of Tennessee and Texas singer-songwriters and the Red Dirt community in praying for Brandon’s complete recovery.
