Rare Country's 5 counts down our five favorite breakup songs that will break your heart Rare Country

Ever have your heart broken? Yeah, us too. Ever cry into your drink? Yeah, us too. Ever crank up a song to 11 to turn it into a musical bandage for your wounded soul? Yeah, us too, and Rare Country’s 5 host Erin Holt is counting up our list of Top 5 songs to soak a hankie, tissue or shirt sleeve after you’ve said goodbye to love.

And remember, don’t cry because it’s over, smile because that jerk is someone else’s problem now.

One of the worst parts of a breakup are those sickening feelings of regret and Darius Rucker recalled every single one of them in our No. 5 breakup song, which also happens to be his first No. 1 hit as a country artist. That line in the song that makes our hearts stop? “Where would we be today, if I never drove that car away.”

When it comes to angst, our No. 4 song has enough to wallow in for days although we don’t recommend that. This dark and moody Rascal Flatts hit has all the pain, tears and regret that anyone who has ever lost the one they thought was “the one” has felt. That line that makes us nod our heads in agreement? “I would trade, give away all the words that I saved in my heart that I left unspoken.”

Our No. 3 breakup song is a little less about regret and a whole lot more about downright hurt. Even though Faith Hill and Tim McGraw are insanely in love, they do a darn good job of selling us on the heartbreak of a lifetime as Faith begs “Don’t you have the slightest feelings left for me?” This is a song for a love that is going to take a long time to recover from. That line that makes us reach for another tissue? “But I’m still living with your goodbye and you’re still going on with your life.”

Still with us? Need another tissue?

The things about relationships is that they are living things that have to be nurtured and tended to in order to grow, and in our No. 2 song, Blake Shelton takes all the responsibility for not doing what it takes to keep love growing. Now, Blake didn’t write this song, so no reading between the lines. But, speaking of lines, that line that makes us cry a little harder? “…beating on the dash, screaming out her name at the windshield, tears soaking up my face, if I had loved her this much all along…”

Words have weight and sometimes all it takes to make things right is either an apology, an “I love you” or a pause before you say something unkind or hurtful. We’re reminded of that in the No. 1 song on our list of Top 5 breakup songs. Jason Aldean kicks himself over and over again with the regret of things left unsaid in this song that was his first chart-topper. That line that makes us ugly cry? “I know I’d never let you walk away, so why do I push you ’til you break.”

Speaking of ugly cries, we’re going to go have one after we thank Erin for holding our hands through this heartbreaking special edition of Rare Country’s 5. Don’t forget to tune in for our regular list of newsmakers in our weekly Rare Country’s 5 every Saturday.
