Losing a friend we knew we could count on is always hard, even when that friend is a dog.

Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines is mourning the death of one of her four-legged pals, Birdy. The massive dog belonged to Natalie’s friend, comedian Jenny Johnson, and Natalie just posted this photo on Instagram showing her laying beside the beloved pet.

Natalie writes, “One of the greatest dogs in the world. RIP Birdy. I loved you, and you tolerated me. No grudges. It’s the story of my life. I’m aware I can be obnoxious, but you knew it was part of my charm 😉 Plus, you had the body of a school bus and really couldn’t be too judgy.”

The loss comes at a time when Natalie is leaning on her friends and fans quite a bit. Media reports recently revealed her pending divorce from longtime husband Adrian Pasdar, and she’s been on vacation in Hawaii this summer. The impending return back to her everyday life has Natalie reaching out for a little support from her Instagram pals.

She writes, “I’m scared as Hell to go back to real life. Still trying to feel strong enough. Send me good vibes:) I’m gonna need them. #peaceandlove #peaceandlove  #strength.”
