Merle Haggard shared a startling prediction with his family just a week before his death instagram/BenHaggard

Country fans knew Merle Haggard was sick. They knew that pneumonia had taken the living legend to his knees and knew that his sickness had resulted in him cancelling show after show after show.

But we didn’t know that he was going to die on April 6.

But he did.

In an Instagram post by his youngest son Ben Haggard, the news was shared that Merle had in fact made a startling prediction about the day of his death.

“A week ago, dad told us he was gonna pass on his birthday, and he wasn’t wrong. A hour ago he took his last breath surrounded by family and friends. He loved everything about life and he loved that everyone of you gave him a chance with his music. He wasn’t just a country singer.. He was the best country singer that ever lived.”

Best known for hits such as “Okie From Muskogee,” ”Mama Tried” and “Workin’ Man Blues,” Merle had been battling pneumonia for months and was said to be surrounded by family and friends at the time of his passing.
