When it comes to opening gifts at Christmastime, most of us end up unwrapping items like new clothes, accessories and electronics. But, every now and then an unlikely present manages to find its way under the tree.
And, Caroline Boyer, wife of Luke Bryan, certainly knows that to be true.
On Christmas Day, the blonde beauty’s country singer husband surprised her with perhaps the most exotic gift ever – two adorable baby kangaroos. The tiny joeys are the newest addition to Brett’s Barn – a home for rescued animals that the couple created after the untimely passing of their niece, Sadie Brett.
Caroline, who wore a blindfold as Luke delivered the present to her, seemed shocked and surprised when she realized the gifts she got were live animals.
“Oh my god! Where did these come from?” she asked Luke in a video posted to his Instagram page.
The married couple later shared a photo on their respective Instagram pages, as a way to show fans how the two furry friends were adjusting to their new life at the Bryan household.
“2 Live Roo and Roo Tang Clan are living their best life,” they captioned the photo, which shows the Kangaroos snuggling up beside the fire inside the couple’s home. “🔥🔥🔥Seriously…real names are Margo and Todd. They are adjusting perfectly [and] are beyond sweet and precious. #brettsbarn #christmasvacation #margoandtodd.”
Although the kangaroos looked warm and toasty by the fire, the star couple ended up receiving backlash from their followers online. Many fans voiced their concerns over the new pets not only wearing diapers, but also being out of their natural habitat.
“Perfectly healthy kangaroos should go back where they belong, not live in a barn. It’d be one thing if it was a rescued one with no chance of survival in the wild, or a temporary case. But this is just sad these creatures need their freedom to roam and grow in far more than a couple acres,” one follower wrote.
“I’m sure you don’t mean any harm by this, but this is cruel,” another commenter added. “Kangaroos belong in the wild, not inside. These beautiful babies are way too young to be away from their mother and should not be in nappies. They shouldn’t be kept in captivity, they are wild animals.”
According to Entertainment Tonight, PETA, also released a statement, which reads: “Baby kangaroos belong in their mothers’ pouches, not in gift bags. These joeys have complex needs, including specialized diets and room to roam — they are not toys and will only become more difficult to care for as they grow older. PETA is calling for an investigation into where these kangaroos came from and stands ready to help Luke Bryan right this wrong and move these vulnerable marsupials to a reputable sanctuary.”
If the two young kangaroos do become new members of Brett’s Barn, they will join several ponies, pigs, donkeys and a goat named Goober Goldsby.
