Bluegrass icon Ricky Skaggs and Christian music superstar Steven Curtis Chapman teamed up onstage at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry on May 26.

The two performed a powerful rendition of “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” – a Christian hymn originally penned by Joseph Scriven in the mid-1800s.

In this clip, Ricky and Steven are joined by the beautiful sounds of fiddle, upright bass and rhythm guitar. After a stunning opening sequence, Steven leans into the microphone to deliver the first verse of the gospel tune, while Ricky contributes to the performance with twinkling mandolin. Then, the two join their voices in epic harmony before Ricky belts out the second verse.

“Have we trials and temptations?/Is there trouble anywhere?/We should never be discouraged/
Take it to the Lord in prayer,” Ricky sings before the group segues into an epic instrumental break.

Ricky and Steven, who have developed a reputation for being fixtures on the famous Opry stage, aren’t the only artists to channel the faith-filled song. Stars like, Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Amy Grant, Glen Campbell and the late Merle Haggard have all put their own spin on the heavenly tune.
