Nearly 44 years ago, music icon John Lennon sat down next to his wife, Yoko Ono, to write the song “Happy Xmas (War is Over.) It was a protest song of sorts against the Vietnam War and these days, it continues to be one of the standards of the season.
But its words have never hit the heart harder than it did when LeAnn Rimes recently performed the song during the annual “CMA Country Christmas,” which aired on Dec. 3 on ABC. During a time that we seem to wake up every morning wondering what is going to happen next, Rimes’ smooth delivery of the song provided quite a gorgeous take on the poignant lyrics.
“I wait for Christmas all year long, it’s my absolute favorite holiday,” Rimes said in a recent press release about her new album “Today is Christmas.” “I am looking forward to making more holiday memories with my fans this year.”
Rimes was one of the many country artists that performed on the show, including Darius Rucker, Charles Kelley, Jewel, Mickey Guyton, David Nail, Kelsea Ballerini, Thomas Rhett and Brett Eldredge. The show, which was hosted for the sixth time by Jennifer Nettles, also featured a gorgeous duet between Martina McBride and Michael W. Smith on the classic hymn “What Child Is This.”
