Songs have a way of defining certain eras and Kenny Rogers’ “She Believes In Me” very much did that for the year of 1979.
In fact, some might argue the song was so formidable that it earned the title of his signature song. Quite a boast considering songs like “The Gambler” and “Lucille” are on Kenny’s resume as well.
Indeed, it was June of 1979 when Kenny soared to the top of the charts with this sugar-sweet ballad, but it wasn’t just country music fans who were in love with it. “She Believes in Me” also peaked at No. 5 on the pop charts and went to the top of the Adult Contemporary chart as well. In fact, Kenny even experienced some success overseas as he almost cracked the Top 40 in Great Britain.
With the song’s success, Kenny laid his stake on the late ’70s as a whole. From 1977 to 1979, seven of his eight songs went to the top spot, with the lone exception being “Sweet Music Man,” which still peaked at No. 9.
As with most successful songs, the song has been covered by numerous artists, including believe it or not, Kenny himself. That’s right, Kenny wasn’t the first one to sing this song. The song’s writer, Steve Gibb, recorded it first but had no luck with it.
