Kenny Chesney takes an important first step for Hurricane Irma recovery Twitter/@kennychesney

Kenny Chesney was crushed to see his beloved St. John island in the Virgin Islands devastated by Hurricane Irma. Kenny had a home on the island, which was destroyed in the storm. As we previously reported, he had about 20 friends (and their dogs) seeking shelter in the house when the storm hit. Thankfully, they all survived.

Now, Kenny is doing everything he can to help his friends and neighbors on the island pick up the pieces and rebuild. Love City is a nickname for St. John, and he’s established the Love for Love City Foundation to raise money for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands hurricane relief efforts.

In addition to establishing the foundation, Kenny is doing what he does best and recording a new song to raise more money for the fund. He posted a photo from the studio with his acoustic guitar in hand. We’ll keep you posted on when you can hear the new song.

Shortly after he saw the damage to the islands, Kenny went on HLN for a phone interview and said, “I’m gonna do everything I can to relieve some stress from people that I’ve really grown to love over the years.”

He plans to eventually rebuild his home on St. John, but will do everything he can to help his friends and neighbors on the island before he starts work on his own house.
