Remember the 2014 ALS “ice bucket challenge?” You know, the one that had famous and non-famous faces alike dumping giant buckets of ice water over their heads on camera to help raise money and awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease? Well, now, the ALS Pepper Challenge has come to take its place.
The new social media phenomenon, created by the Haberstroh family in honor of their mom, Patty, requires willing participants to film themselves eating a seriously hot pepper. And already, celebrities all over the country have joined in to help support the worthy cause, including Kelly Clarkson, Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks.
Kelly, a season 14 “The Voice” coach, was nominated to take part in the challenge by Trisha, and responded by posting a hilarious video on Instagram of her trying her first ever habanero.
But first, she had a few choice words for the “She’s In Love With The Boy” singer.
“I just want to say, first of all, I cannot stand you, Trisha Yearwood, because I was in the clear. Garth didn’t even say my name and then you just brought it up out of nowhere,” Kelly hilariously joked of Trisha’s dare in the three-part clip before working up the courage to take her first bite. “I don’t want to look like a wimp, but I’m going to cry, probably. I’m just really nervous about it, so I’m just stalling.”
After Kelly bit into the fire-colored pepper, she immediately set her habanero and jalapeño-filled plate down and lunged for a drink. Her friends, who filmed the entire scene, couldn’t help but laugh as the 35-year-old hit-maker tried to ease the pain by wiping her eyes and chugging on milk.
“My tongue is on fire,” “Into the nose,” “My eyes are crying,” “This is mean,” “I can’t stand you, Trisha Yearwood,” and “Jesus, take the wheel,” are just some of the phrases Kelly uttered to describe the uncomfortable sensation she was feeling in her mouth and throat. At one point, the “American Idol” champ even begged her pals to grab her an ice cube so that she could numb her burning tongue.
After the whole ordeal, Kelly quickly put a few other familiar faces up to the ALS test!
“Get ready @aliciakeys, @blakeshelton, and @adamlevine for the #ALSPepperChallenge!” she captioned the video, before also calling out her husband. “Also @brandonblackstock, I challenge you! #UrWelcomFromYourLovingWife.”
As previously noted, Trisha – with the help of hubby Garth — requested that Kelly do the pepper challenge, after they did it first. Or rather, Trisha ate the pepper while Garth cheered her on. The married star couple also encouraged Ellen DeGeneres, Jimmy Kimmel and celebrity chef and Food Network star Jeff Mauro to take on the challenge. You can see some of those amazing moments and more in the Instagram and Twitter posts below.
