The Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment and assault scandal has opened the doors for women both inside and outside the entertainment industry to talk about their own similar experiences, and they have come forward in surprising numbers. Naturally, the topic has also become a red carpet interview hot button, as Kelly Clarkson recently learned.

Asked about the scandal on the red carpet of Variety’s “Power of Women” event in Los Angeles on Oct. 13, Kelly said, “I honestly was completely shocked. I don’t really have a lot of industry friends — I live in Tennessee and before that in Texas — so I don’t really hang out with [industry people], but I was pretty shocked.” But she added, “I’m always a big supporter of people who stand up for themselves, regardless of what the situation is. Honestly, it’s really shocking for a woman who has children as well.”

Indeed, Kelly says that the awful information that has come to light about former movie mogul Weinstein’s multiple alleged offenses against women does serve as a teaching moment for all of her children.

“We have four children,” the three-time Grammy Award winner told the crowd in attendance. “It’s an important time to mold these lives … to sit down and have these conversations no matter how awkward they might be. I think we should take this horrific, negative thing that’s happening and teach not only our daughters, but our sons, to stand up for what’s right … and how to respect other people and their bodies and how to love and be kind.”

We couldn’t agree more, Kelly.
