As the year is winding to a close, many of us are spending time with family and friends recalling sweet old memories and those we lost way too soon. There’s something about the holidays that makes most of us nostalgic for precious times passed. Rory Feek’s daughter, Heidi, shared a lovely memory with friends that follow her on social media.
In a sweet home video shared on her Instagram, we see Heidi and her late stepmom, Joey Martin Feek, singing and dancing together. They appear to be taking a break from the action at Marcy Jo’s Mealhouse, the restaurant that had been co-owned and operated by the singer-songwriter and her sister-in-law. And we can assume that they’ve spent a minute or two watching the Disney animated movie “The Little Mermaid.”
With arms in the air and spinning like ballerinas, Joey and Heidi joyfully sing a few lines from “Part of Your World,” and we can’t help but feel transplanted to that moment, that place and that memory.
In her caption, Heidi writes, “missing this queen this holiday season 💙,” and our hearts cracked a little.
Heidi doesn’t reference a day or year when the video was shot, so we don’t know if it was before or after baby Indiana’s arrival and Joey’s cancer diagnosis, but Joey appears to be in good health and the pair is having an amazing time. They didn’t even know they were creating a memory that would be treasured by so many, especially by little Indiana who has, no doubt, seen “The Little Mermaid” by now.
It’s hard to believe that Joey has been gone now for nearly two years, and even more difficult to comprehend why someone so good was taken from the world so soon, but it’s obvious that her kindness, generosity and compassion live on through everyone she touched. And her talent continues on in her recordings that we all treasure.
This fall, after much thought and prayer, Rory shared the news with friends and fans that he would be making a gradual return to music. While Joey will most certainly be missed, it brings a smile to our faces knowing that Heidi could potentially step in and perform some of those songs we loved to hear Joey and Rory sing together.
In the meantime, Rory has his hands full raising the couple’s daughter, Indy, and finishing up building the backyard schoolhouse that she will attend with other children from their rural Tennessee community.
The school was scheduled to open in January and, according to “Country Living,” the curriculum will change based on the children’s needs, but it will also include music classes and rural life skills like gardening and livestock care.
