The Rare Country Awards honor the year’s best in country music as determined by fans. The death of Merle Haggard is nominated for Country Story of the Year. Cast your vote at Winners to be announced Dec. 15.

At the 2014 Grammy Awards, the late Merle Haggard was joined by country heavyweights Kris Kristofferson, Blake Shelton and Willie Nelson for a medley of some of the foursome’s biggest hits.

The four singers went through the country songbook including “The Highwayman,” by The Highwayman, “Okie From Muskogee,” by Merle Haggard,  and “Mammas, Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys” by Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.

During that year’s Grammy Awards, Kristofferson was honored with the annual Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award.

On the afternoon of Wednesday, April 6, Haggard passed away on his 79th birthday, leaving the country music community in a state of shock.
