Country legend Charlie Daniels recalls the night one of his all-time heroes joined him on stage

You can’t stand in front of the legend that is Charlie Daniels without being somewhat in awe.

And there are many that have made Daniels feel the same way through the years.

One of those legends was the late and oh-so-great Roy Acuff.

“He was one of my all time heroes,” said Daniels during an interview with Rare Country, recalling his performance with ‘the king of country music’ and Box Car Willie during Volunteer Jam X of the country classic “Cannonball.”

“He was such a nice guy, and we had become friends over the years. But I had no idea he was going to come out to play. I was there standing stage left and he was coming out stage right, and I just was floored.”

It’s these sorts of moments that Volunteer Jam has been known for 40 years. Scheduled to take place August 12 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, this year’s event will help support the efforts of The Journey Home Project and include performances from country legends such as Trace Adkins, Tracy Lawrence, Craig Morgan, The Oak Ridge Boys and Montgomery Gentry…just to name a few.

“We usually hold back announcing a couple of artists every year,” chuckles Daniels. “And this year, we have some dandies.”
