It’s the most re-recorded song of Dolly Parton’s career.

“Jolene” has been covered by rock bands like The White Stripes and pop stars like Miley Cyrus. Entertainers from all over the world have recorded it — Japan, Ireland, Finland and Germany even. And even artists who haven’t re-recorded it cover it in their live shows.

Of course, our favorite versions are when country stars like Reba, Kellie Pickler, Alison Krauss and Carrie Underwood all cover it. Carrie even found a way to incorporate the song as an intro/mashup with her own hit single from 2005, “Before He Cheats.”

Makes sense since they’re both tunes about the other woman… although the outcomes are entirely different. Dolly is begging Jolene to not take her man and Carrie? Well, there’s this whole matter of a baseball bat.

Dolly admits that there is a lot of truth in the story. During an appearance on NBC’s “Today” on Aug. 25, she said that husband Carl was flirting with a lady at the bank in order to get a better deal. It didn’t sit well with Dolly and a song was born.

The iconic star also said that she may have discovered the real Jolene! Dolly said she received a letter from someone who thought she might be the subject of the insanely popular song, except her name isn’t Jolene, it’s Jolie. Obviously, the country diva wants to do a little research before she makes a big reveal and honestly, we’re torn as to whether or not we want to know the real “Jolene.” The mystery has been part of the charm.
