As country music fans have been fretting over Carrie Underwood’s facial injury that has kept her out of the spotlight since mid-November, the superstar did find a way on Jan. 6 to put the spotlight back on what truly matters — her incredible voice.
It began with a tease of sorts in the early morning when Carrie reposted an NBC Instagram indicating that she had something special in store for her fans who would be tuning into the NFL wild card match-up between the Atlanta Falcons and Los Angeles Rams later that night. “Tune in tonight and you might hear a little something new,” the post read.
Before the night was over, Carrie was back on her socials with another repost originally shared by NBC, along with a short clip and video of her new song “The Champion.”
Of course, country music fans will recall that Carrie first told us about “The Champion” late last year when she spoke about writing the song specifically for this year’s Super Bowl LII, and letting hubby Mike Fisher get a sneak listen of the entire song.
“My husband loved it,” she said in an article published in Variety in early September. “He would listen to it before playoff games. He was like ‘I want everyone to hear it!’ and I had to tell him, ‘You can’t do that. You can’t play it in the locker room. I’m sorry.’ But that was a good indicator that we were on the right track.”
Carrie’s new song has also received accolades from none other than “NBC Sunday Night Football” executive producer Fred Gaudelli. “I think it’s going to become a sports anthem,” he told Variety about Carrie’s musical contribution. “It’s going to be one of those songs that you see cut to highlights for the next 25 years.”
Carrie has greeted fans of “NBC Sunday Night Football” since 2013.
And while country music fans will undoubtedly be tuning into the Super Bowl on Feb. 4 to get a listen to the entire song, they will also undoubtedly be tuning in to check out Justin Timberlake’s Super halftime show. On Jan. 7, Justin was asked on the red carpet of the Golden Globe Awards about his preparation for the big show.
“I have an idea of what I want to do,” Justin told “Extra.” “I’ve actually gone to Minneapolis and seen the stadium, so I have a good feel of what the lay of the land is. We just enjoyed our break so much with our son and our family. I think we will get through tonight and tomorrow and will start hunkering down on getting specific.”
It’s enough to get any music fan excited for this year’s Super Bowl! Carrie Underwood, Justin Timberlake … and football?!? Sounds like the perfect night to us. Is it too early to order the wings!?
