Blake Shelton has never been one to shy away from competition. He’s also never been afraid to say what’s on his mind. Perhaps that’s why he’s always remained one of the most popular coaches on NBC’s “The Voice.”
Now that the reality television competition series is heading into its 14th season, Blake, who currently reigns as the coach with the most wins (six!), decided to playfully throw some shade at his co-star, Alicia Keys, who is embarking on her third season as a coach.
Oh, and he delivered the sass on her birthday!
Alicia marked her 37th birthday on Jan. 25. In honor of her special occasion, Blake created a birthday video with fellow “The Voice” coaches Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson. Instead of just simply telling Alicia “happy birthday” in the clip though, the country crooner threw some cocky humor into the mix.
“I just wanted to wish you a happy birthday,” Blake said in this video, as part of promotion for “The Voice.” “I just wanted to take a minute and welcome you back to the show. I’m so glad you’re here, but I still stand by what I say — you’re the worst coach we’ve ever had on ‘The Voice.’”
We can totally understand if Alicia feels pressure to throw a comeback at Blake now. After all, he won the crown in her absence last season with fan favorite contestant Chloe Kohanski. Prior to that, Alicia nabbed the victory over Blake with her mentee, Chris Blue. But, Alicia might have to think twice about adding fuel to the fire this time around, because Blake softened up his message later on in the video.
“Even though you’re my arch enemy on the show, you’re one of my favorite people in the world,” he said. “I love you.”
Awwww. How sweet!
But the trash talking between coaches if officially on. As we previously reported, in an interview with “Entertainment Tonight,” Alicia said she wants to come back on the show and put Blake “in his place.” She also called the country superstar a “secret villain that’s trying to win it all.”
As for Adam and Kelly, they too shared some birthday words of their own for Alicia.
“Happy birthday Alicia,” Kelly said enthusiastically. “I’m so excited for your birthday that we should have some candles, some cake and some fun. I’ll see you in February!”
“I’ll see you in February, where I’ll beat you on ‘The Voice,’ but happy birthday!” Adam confidently added before blowing Alicia an air kiss.
“The Voice” returns Feb. 26 with a two-hour episode that starts at 8 p.m. (ET/PT) on NBC.
