NASCAR driver Martin Truex Jr. dominated the Quaker State 400 on July 8 at Kentucky Speedway with a drive, a passion and a dominance seldom seen in a NASCAR race.
And now we know why.
Martin’s long time girlfriend, Sherry Pollex, is currently experiencing a reoccurrence of her cancer, a sad fact that she shared with fans on her social media channels. “Had to undergo some surgery for a recurrence,” she wrote on July 8. “Hope to go home tomorrow. I’ll be back at the track.”
Indeed, she would have definitely have been in victory lane to welcome Martin and congratulate him if she could. But Martin remains upbeat about her ongoing fight.
“We found out a while ago about it,” Martin told ESPN shortly after calling Sherry right from victory lane. “She went in this weekend to have some surgery done. Everything went perfectly good, went as planned. I’m going to bring her home tomorrow. I’m excited to get home and see her, and everything is going great.”
NASCAR fans will recall that Sherry was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer back in 2014. Unfortunately, doctors say that nearly 80 percent of people with Sherry’s type of cancer have a recurrence in the course of their cancer fight.
