On July 12, one of NASCAR’s most beloved families announced the news that their mother, Margaret Waltrip, had passed away at the age of 90. As the news made its way throughout the sport, fans flooded drivers Michael Waltrip and his brother Darrell Waltrip with well wishes.
“Mainly, I don’t like Twitter,” Michael wrote in a tweet on the evening of July 12. “Some are just rude. But today I love it. The outpouring of love for momma and my family is overwhelming. TY.”
In another tweet, Michael shared a copy of his mom’s obituary and captioned it, “90. That’s awesome. She was a great lady. I was blessed to be the son of Margaret and Leroy Waltrip. If you’re so inclined donate to Hospice.”
There were also pictures shared with fans of the family matriarch.
“Our family was blessed to be able to be with mom in the past couple of days,” Michael added on his Facebook page. “We were all able to tell her we love her and she would smile and mouth, ‘Love you, too.’ Knowing we were saying goodbye, and Mom knowing we were there by her side, made her passing as comfortable as possible.”
We send prayers to everyone hurting over the loss of Margaret.
