It was just a simple tweet, but singer-songwriter Chely Wright made a big statement when she wrote, “I stand with @kaepernick7” followed by the American flag emoji.

Former NFL player Colin Kaepernick made headlines when he and a few other players took a knee during the national anthem at NFL games to protest police brutality and injustice against African Americans.

He’s back in the news in the wake of President Trump’s recent speech in Alabama saying that NFL players who take a knee during the national anthem should be fired. Trump’s statements led to some NFL teams locking arms in solidarity during the anthem at Sept, 24 games across the country, while other players took a knee to join the protest Kaepernick started. Other teams sat out the anthem in their locker rooms rather than on the field.

For Chely’s part, she took to Twitter to speak on the issue as a person in the public eye.

Chely also sent out this tweet, which came a day before fellow artist Meghan Linsey took a knee after performing the national anthem at the Tennessee Titans game on Sunday.
