Reba McEntire and Brooks & Dunn are now co-headlining a long-running show at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. If it wasn’t for this hit duet from the ’90s, there’s a good chance that show would have never happened.

Back in 1997, Reba and Brooks & Dunn teamed up for a spectacular co-headlining tour that sold out arenas across the country. B&D’s Ronnie Dunn knew they had a good thing going, and he thought a hit duet between Reba and Brooks & Dunn was just what they needed to keep the tour on the road for another year.

That’s where another star of ’90s country comes in. Terry McBride scored hits with his band McBride & The Ride, including their signature song, “Sacred Ground,” in 1992. By the mid-’90s, Terry was an in-demand songwriter, and Ronnie recruited Terry to help him write a possible duet for Brooks & Dunn and Reba.

Lucky for Ronnie, Terry had the talent to both co-write “If You See Him, If You See Her,” as well as sing all of Ronnie’s parts on the song. That helped them figure out how it would sound for the actual recording.

Terry tells Rare Country, “We went in and recorded a demo of the song, and I did my best Ronnie Dunn impression. We found this girl, Sunny Russ, who did a great Reba. We got it to Ronnie, and he just flipped.”

Even though Reba and Brooks & Dunn both loved the song, it took about a year to get “If You See Him, If You See Her.” The two acts were on different record labels, and there was a lot of politics about who would release the song. Reba was having none of it.

Terry explains, “It looked like it wasn’t going to happen. Then Reba stepped up and said, ‘Listen, we love the song. You guys are going to have to figure out how to make it work.’ And they did.”

“If You See Him, If You See Her” is still a centerpiece of Reba and Brooks & Dunn’s Vegas show to this day.

As for Terry, he’s back in front of the microphone with a brand-new EP out called “Hotels & Highways.” You can check it out now at
