For most NASCAR drivers, this is the time of the year when emotions begin getting revved up as the green flag for the Daytona 500 gets closer. In years past, Dale Earnhardt Jr. would be one of the most revved up drivers of them all, and you’d find him at the shop eagerly preparing for the biggest race of the year.

Yet, Dale Jr. has other things to be excited about this year.

Considering that he retired from driving at the conclusion of the 2017 season, Dale Jr. has something completely different on his mind these days … and that’s his baby girl!

“Yep, we have a baby girl due in May,” Dale told fellow athlete-turned-podcaster Lance Armstrong in a new interview for Lance’s “The Forward Podcast.” “The first of May! It’s awesome to watch [wife Amy’s] belly change. We are just now at the point that we can feel the baby kicking. She’s been feeling it forever because she’s carrying it, but I’m finally able to feel it. It’s real.”

While the couple has some baby names in mind, they are not rushing that decision. “We have about three or four that we like and [are] messing around with,” explained Dale. “I’m rushing. I want to do the nursery now. I’m so excited. I want to get everything going since I can imagine that the last couple of months of her pregnancy, she’s not going to want to do it. I must be patient. I’m nesting. [Amy] tells me that we should wait till the day in case we come up with a new name. She’s slowing me down. We have some cool names.”

During the same interview, Dale talked about how much his life changed when Amy, who he called “the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen,” walked into his life as they worked on a property of his.

“I told her to build it like you want to build it because you will be living in it someday,” Dale recalled of the early moments of their relationship. “I was confident that I would make her my wife someday. I was a bachelor, and single and running like a madman.”

But yes, Amy changed all of that.

“The reason we took so long to get married is because I didn’t know what I was doing,” Dale laughed over the fact they dated for 10 years before getting married. “She stood with me and got me turned around. I was a mess, man. I always credit Amy. If it hadn’t been for her vision and her stick-to-itness and confidence in the relationship, it wouldn’t have happened. I wasn’t responsible enough, but she hung in there and saw something in me that people didn’t see.”

And we bet she knew right from the start that he would become an amazing daddy, too. We can’t wait to see these two enter this new season of their life!
