Oh, this Dale Earnhardt Jr. commercial is bringing back some serious memories …
… and seriously toying with our emotions!
Junior recently shot the spot for Goodyear in his native North Carolina, complete with home videos, including rare footage of him growing up on the track with his father, the late, great Dale Earnhardt.
Which is the purpose of the spot—to talk about the importance of legacies.
Dale Sr., left an incredible legacy for the world as one of the greatest NASCAR drivers to ever live. Then it was Junior’s turn to carry on that legacy and begin one of his own.
The poignant commercial is titled “Make A Name,” and it will tug at your heartstrings.
Take a look, and brace yourselves, because this one is extra special.
Y’all, we cannot get over that old footage of Dale as a young man at the track, watching his dad with his buddies and then climbing into his own car for the first time.
And to have all of that soundtracked by this incredible new version of the classic Jim Croce song, “I Got A Name” (performed by none other than Jim’s son, A.J. Croce) … please, pass the tissues now. We are a sobbing mess.
And so are Junior’s fans …
Everyone has a hero.
The commercial’s final, heart-melting moment comes in the last frame, where a young Dale tells the camera, “I just wanna make my own name, you know?”
Oh, Dale, you have done that and so much more! And your late father would be so proud of the man you became and the glory you’ve brought to the Earnhardt name.
But in a recent interview with USA Today’s “For The Win,” Dale said there were a few things he wishes he could go back and tell his much younger self.
“There are so many things you worry about as a little kid that aren’t important that you think are the most important things at the time,” he said. “But they’re not. I worried myself ill when I was a little kid. I actually had ulcers as a child because I was so worried about making it in racing or what I would become. Would I succeed or be a bust? So I would definitely try to reassure myself and maybe calm myself a little bit and not be concerned with everything and just enjoy my childhood. I think I worried way too much.”
Dale will serve as the Grand Marshal of the Daytona 500 this year, which makes fans super happy since his retirement announcement has no doubt been hard on NASCAR fans.
But this amazing legacy will live on forever!
Tune in to the Daytona 500, Sunday, Feb. 18 beginning at 1:30 p.m. on FOX.
