Carrie Underwood thrilled her fans around the world Friday morning with the release of her brand-new song, “The Champion.” The video for the inspirational anthem will debut to kick off NBC’s coverage of Super Bowl LII on Feb. 4, and it will also be featured during NBC’s 2018 Olympic Winter Games broadcasts as well.
The song is tailor-made for athletes competing at the highest levels with lyrics like, “I’ve been working my whole life / and now it’s do or die / I am invincible / Unbreakable / Unstoppable / Unshakeable / They knock me down / I get up again.” “The Champion” is also the perfect workout boost for all of us still trying to make good on those New Year’s resolutions at the gym, too.
Carrie says, “When we were writing ‘The Champion,’ our main focus was to celebrate athletes at the top of their game, but we also wanted the song to resonate with people in their everyday lives. We hope the lyrics will inspire people to push themselves beyond their limits to conquer anything they are trying to accomplish or overcome. There’s a champion in every single one of us!”
In addition to the powerful vocal performance from Carrie, “The Champion” also includes a cameo on the bridge from rapper Ludacris. It turns out Carrie specifically asked for Ludacris to join her on the track.
He says, “It was a pleasure to collaborate with Carrie for this inspirational song.”
Luda also tweeted about the song, saying, “I love doing the unexpected.”
“The Champion” was written specifically for the Super Bowl opening by Carrie and her frequent collaborators Brett James and Chris DeStefano, as well as Ludacris. It was born out of her relationship with NBC singing the “Sunday Night Football” opening for the last five years,
Of note, Carrie filmed the video for “The Champion” — that you’ll see at the Super Bowl — last year. Last September, she told “Variety” that her husband, former NHL hockey player Mike Fisher, listened to the song to get pumped up last year before playoff games when his team, the Nashville Predators, was in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Carrie said, “My husband loved it. He would listen to it before playoff games. He was like ‘I want everyone to hear it!’ and I had to tell him, ‘You can’t do that. You can’t play it in the locker room. I’m sorry.’ But that was a good indicator that we were on the right track.”
The lyric video for “The Champion” is now trending on YouTube, too.
We know Carrie’s fans are so excited to have this new song to tide them over until her new album comes out later this year. Carrie is currently in the studio working on that new project.
