When Scotty McCreery decided to pay a visit to one of his biggest fans’ homes, he didn’t expect to discover a new music talent in the process.
Scotty’s fellow North Carolina native Dustin Chapman has been stricken with an incurable disease (achalasia) that affects the esophagus’ ability to carry food to the stomach. Dustin’s mom, Sandi, asked him what she could do to help him feel better, and he told her he’d like to sing with Scotty McCreery. Mama swung into action, and Scotty was soon knocking on Dustin’s door in Whiteville, North Carolina.
Scotty brought his future wife Gabi along for the visit, where the two guys sat down to sing a few songs together, including Scotty’s 2013 Top 10 hit, “See You Tonight.” That’s when Scotty discovered he was sitting across from a really talented young man.
“Dustin could sing,” Scotty tells Rare Country. “You never know what to expect. Obviously with what we do, it’s why we do it, to go out there and help people and impact them in a positive way. So, I’m glad to do it, and it worked out great in the schedule. So, we went and saw him. I was like, ‘Well see if he has any chops, but you know, who knows?’ The man opened his mouth, and he could sing! So, that was cool to see.”
Dustin also performed an original song, “Break Me Down,” for Scotty. It was a sweet visit all captured on camera.
Rare Country recently caught up with Dustin, and he’s still flying high from that performance with Scotty that has now gone viral. It’s also nominated for a Rare Country Award in the Fan Moment of the Year category.
Dustin says of singing with Scotty, “It was one of the best experiences of my life.”
He adds, “Scotty has always been someone I have looked up to, especially the way he has stayed true to his faith throughout his career. He’s also very humble and kind to all of his fans.”
