Dan + Shay’s Dan Smyers has been surprised plenty of times throughout his singing career. He has watched songs rocket to the top of the charts faster than he thought possible, and he has seen venues fill to the rafters with more fans that he could count.
But perhaps his biggest surprise came from his wife of eight months, Abby.
“Abby is in the other room, and she’s not going to love that I am telling you this,” Dan said in a recent interview with Rare Country, “but she is an amazing singer.”
So amazing, in fact, that Abby actually found herself providing background vocals on the country duo’s current single, “Tequila.”
“We needed a female voice on the song and we were thinking of finding another artist, and I just instantly thought that her voice would be perfect,” Dan tells us. “She always sings in the car, and in the house we are always singing harmonies, so before I knew it, I had talked her into coming into the studio and giving it a try. It was her first time on a studio microphone and she crushed it. Everyone who heard it thought I had hired some professional artist from Music Row.”
Of course, Dan eventually shared this news on his socials, which had fans wondering — could Abby find her way onto the stage to sing the song any time soon? “If I called her to the stage to sing ‘Tequila,’ she probably would be very hesitant,” he said. “I brought her up onstage for her birthday and she was very embarrassed.” (Watch that moment here.)
And while Abby might not be loving the idea of singing professionally, Dan says she is loving the song, “Tequila,” having been touched like so many others by its quirky, yet romantic story.
“Everyone assumes these songs are autobiographical, but we can still do a heartbreak song even though we are happily married,” laughs Dan of the song, which rocketed to No. 1 on the iTunes U.S. Country Singles chart. “We just had this conversation with Thomas Rhett with his song ‘Marry Me.’ Everyone is happily married but it’s sometimes nice to write something from our past. Plus, often you are writing with three or four people, and everyone puts their own story in the pot and stirs it up. We just make music for the people, and every person out there has experienced heartbreak in one way or another.”
Dan says he and bandmate Shay Mooney are now getting ready to shoot the video for “Tequila,” and they couldn’t be more excited about it. “We are going to shoot it on a four-day shoot,” he says of the elaborate-sounding project. “We are really going for it.”
And while the success of “Tequila” has been quite a way to begin 2018, both Dan and Shay are still getting over the excitement of last year, which brought their third consecutive No. 1 single with “How Not To.” Both men also married their respective spouses last year, and Shay and his wife, Hannah, also welcomed a son, Asher.
Says Dan, “2017 changed both of us for the better. I think we are just more productive as a group because we have certainly grown up. When you are single, you are out late and just living a totally different life. I mean, Shay returns texts at 10 a.m. now, and we are both probably in bed by 10 p.m. [Laughs] We are old men now.”
Old men … who have another hit on their hands, that’s for sure.
