Before he set out on his own, Stapleton was a Nashville legend, responsible for writing songs for artists like Luke Bryan and Thomas Rhett.
On Sunday night, at the top of the 2016 Academy of Country Music Awards, co-hosts Dierks Bentley and Luke Bryan tried to figure out who was responsible for Stapleton’s success.
As the heavily bearded and sullen Stapleton sat by with a coy smile on his face, artists like Carrie Underwood, Thomas Rhett and Jason Aldean stood up to claim that they were responsible for Stapleton’s success.

By the end of the bit, the entire arena had taken to their feet to take credit for Stapleton’s rise to fame — except for Stapleton himself who sat back and squeaked out the slightest smile at the extra attention he was receiving.
