Don Williams was a master at understatement when it came to wringing all the emotion out of a song. That’s what makes his song, “Amanda,” such an enduring classic. Chris Stapleton has covered that song quite a bit over the years, and he’s begun performing it again as a tribute to Don, who passed away September 8.

In this video from his recent show in Ohio, you can hear Chris giving his all on the cover. It’s clear he was a huge fan of Don Williams, even though Chris admits he only met the Country Music Hall of Fame member one time.

Here’s an even better video of Chris performing “Amanda” from one of his many appearances on the Grand Ole Opry.

Chris’s tribute to Don continued with a rip-roaring cover of the legend’s best-known hit, “Tulsa Time.”

Chris’s performance is just one of many tributes to Don Williams we’ve seen since his passing. Tanya Tucker sang a bit of Don’s “Amanda” during her appearance at the Grand Ole Opry last weekend. At the Americana Awards and Honors show in Nashville September 14, Emmylou Harris led an all-star cast of performers for the show’s finale. You’ll be able to see that last performance in full on PBS’s “Austin City Limits” this November.
