Proving that she has the vocal chops to tackle just about any song, former Sugarland member Jennifer Nettles recently put her own spin on a Broadway classic, singing “No Good Deed” from the popular musical, “Wicked.”
In this clip, part of the musical’s YouTube series “#OutOfOz: Wicked Studio Sessions,” Jennifer breathes new life into the emotional tune, which was originally sung by Idina Menzel in the musical.
She adds a bit of country twang to the lyrics, while a fiddler adds even more in the background. Meanwhile, an upright bassist, a guitarist, a pianist and a tambourine player all contribute their parts to the Stephen Schwartz-penned tune, turning it into an acoustic jam.
Turns out that singing “No Good Deed” was actually a dream role for Jennifer, who is no stranger to Broadway, having previously starred in the musicals “Chicago” and “Mamma Mia!”
“I love the music so much. I first saw ‘Wicked’ about 11 years ago and I’ve seen it very many times since,” she tells People magazine. “Growing up doing theater and loving musical theater, ‘Wicked’ was a game changer for me. I felt empowered by these two fabulous women at the center of its story, and swept away by these wonderful songs.”
Along with “No Good Deed,” Jennifer is also set to duet on “Wicked’s” “As Long As You’re Mine” with Broadway star Annaleigh Ashford as part of the YouTube series. Check out her performance of “No Good Deed” in the clip above.
