If you peruse the shelves of your local bookstore or search your favorite digital library, under the category of “childcare” or “parenting” you’ll find that the titles measure into the tens of thousands.
Now add in the number of well-meaning individuals that dispense unsolicited advice to new parents, and that would be pretty much everyone they know.
It could all be enough to make a first-time mom or dad’s head spin right off, especially when scrutinizing eyes are ready to pounce. Of course, Kelly Clarkson has never been one to put too much value on the judgment of others. And she’s the same way when it comes to raising her two small children, daughter River Rose and son Remy.
In an interview posted on Radio.com, the laid-back singer-songwriter recently said, “I’m not above a spanking, which people aren’t necessarily into. And I don’t mean like hitting her hard, I just mean a spanking.”
Kelly, who has never shied away from being open and honest with fans also said, “So my parents spanked me and I did fine in life and I feel fine about it.”
We would agree she did fine in life! Kelly has released eight studio albums, with six of them selling over a million copies each, including her 2004 album, “Breakaway,” which has sold over six million on its own. She’s also headlined eight successful tours and won two ACMs, a CMA, four AMAs, 12 Billboard awards and three Grammys, not to mention the first season of “American Idol.”
Oh yeah, she’s also written two children’s books named after her firstborn: “River Rose and the Magical Lullaby” and “River Rose and the Magical Christmas.”
Now, this interview clip can be taken out of context since the question she is apparently responding to is never heard, but the Texas native, who is as beloved for her sense of humor as she is for her incredible voice, sounds pretty gentle as she explains about disciplining her 3-year-old daughter, “I warn her. I’m like, ‘Hi, I’m going to spank you on your bottom if you don’t stop right now. Like, this is ridiculous.’”
And before those who disagree with the superstar begin casting stones, Kelly also notes that, despite receiving the same sort of discipline as a youngster, “I’m a well-rounded individual with a lot of character, so I think it’s fine.”
Kelly regularly shares stories of her adventures with River Rose and Remy that seem to reveal that both children are happy and fun-loving, and while Remy is just a year old, big sister River seems to have as strong of a personality, sense of humor and intellect as her dynamic mom. In fact, both of the offspring of Kelly and husband Brandon Blackstock are so enchanting that, like many of Kelly’s fans, we so wish that there were more babies in the future. Unfortunately, Kelly suffered from overwhelming morning sickness with both pregnancies and, let’s face it, that doesn’t sound like fun at all. As a result, she had repeatedly declared her intention not to have any more children.
