As countless country fans woke up on September 13 still mourning the sudden death of Troy Gentry and mentally preparing themselves for his memorial service on September 14, they received a gift that seemed to come from heaven.

There, debuting across various radio stations, was new Montgomery Gentry music, with Troy himself singing lead on a brand new song called “Better Me.”

“This morning we are celebrating the life of our dear friend and brother, Troy Gentry,” SiriusXM’s The Highway shared on its Facebook page. “We are proud to bring you the brand new song “Better Me” by Montgomery Gentry. Music truly is life’s best medicine. For those asking, it will be available [for sale] this Friday.”


Montgomery Gentry was putting the finishing touches on a new album celebrating their 20th anniversary as a band as the news of Troy’s death spread after a helicopter accident.

And instantly after the new song was shared, fans headed to Twitter to express their love for the song and the country duo. “’Better Me’ is the perfect epitaph for #TroyGentry,” one fan wrote. “Bravo — and Rest In Peace.” Other fans also weighed in on the song and their continued sadness over the Grand Ole Opry member’s death.
